'Staged' Facial Expression Renders

Here are some expression tests of the main character of our short 'Staged'. Dennis Moellers (director, animator), Chris Sulzbach (modeling), Justin Thomas (animation) and Piero Macgowan (concept artist) have been working on this together.

I based the morph targets off the Morphy Rig by Josh Burton. These test poses are based off of a 2d-cel character sheet of Flynn from 'Tangled'. I wanted to see if I could hit the same poses with my rig. The textures are wip and the hair is untextured.

This was the process:

I wasn't getting the sort of strong facial poses I'd been seeing in 3d movie characters with my original morphs. So I took the morphy base head and changed it's shape to match my main character (Peter). Chris Sulzbach created the original model of Peter. I copied the Peter shaped Morphy model and changed the topology to get the sharpness of the nose/brow and added Peter's ears and neck. Chris Sulzbach finalized this new model, making sure it was smoothed out and pushed some shapes. Then I skinwrapped the new model to the Peter-shaped Morphy model and extracted each morph. I had to redo the brows from scratch but 90% of the other morphs worked. Lastly I went through and cleaned up each morph to work for Peter's stretched shape, which took 2-3 weeks. The whole process took about 2 months in my spare time.

A Bit Late ...

... given that it's been two weeks since I did these.

whatever.

5, 10, and 20 minutes from top to bottom. I like the shorter poses better.

Learning Illustrator

I've had Illustrator for years now and barely touch it. Shame on me. A poster competition at my local climbing gym convinced me to spend some time playing around.

I didn't win the poster competition, but learned a few quirks of how an illustrator workflow is handled.

Yo.

The last piece I did a while back.

New Blog Smell!

This isn't actually representative of any work I've done in the past, but It's my first "pixel art" style image, and it's also the latest thing I did fresh from this past weekend. I had a project for my Arts of Japan class that required me to make something that represented a Japanese hand scroll, It's made to go on the ipod touch to create a sort of techno-hand-scroll... thing...
Obviously I was directly inspired by the new game Sword & Sorcery, along with Eyvind Earle, and Mary Blair.

hello!

Hey there.  This is Sulz.  I am here to post some stuff that I have done, am working on, and will continue to work on further.

My latest work is my son!  Shepherd just turned two months old!

This is a model I worked on for an Animation Mentor type school.  They wanted a very simple character that the students could animate.  The rig and morph targets were created by a TA at Naughty Dog.  Once I see this guy in action, I will post some link.:

This is the model I did for the modeling contest at FXS.

Here are Carmen and Peter, the two main characters for a short film I am working on with Dennis and Justin T.

This is a texture test of Peter.

We are in the process of re-doing the faces for both Carmen and Peter so they are based off of a very excellent facial rig that we can get the best morphs out of.  I will post up more images of these models as they reach different milestones in their development.

And a full body of Peter.

This is an old bust I made for fun.

This is a very old model that I did in college.  We all start somewhere.  Yes, it is a Vampire Ginger Bread Man.

Also, this weekend, I will take some photos of my figure drawings from the figure drawing workshops we have every other Wednesday.  Thanks for checking out the blog!

Derelict

This is a painting I made for my mom last Christmas. She really wanted a picture of a derelict boat so this is what I came up with.

I didn't use enough reference for the details on the boat, so a lot of the stuff on there is pretty much made up.

11 Second Club

Here's my entry for 11 Second Club's February competition. I was learning Maya, a couple new rigs, and pretty much character animation in general so it was a good crash course. I placed 7th:
